Second Line Drugs

  1. CO CIPROFLOXACIN TABLET, 500MG (J01MA02)

  2. APO-CLINDAMYCIN 150MG (J01FF01)

1. Mild to moderate

trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole
160 mg/800 mg tablet, bidx 10 days

or amoxicillin/clavulanate
500 mg/125 mg tablet, tidx 10 days

or cefuroxime axetil
500 mg, bid x 10 days

AND, If Legionella is suspected, to any of the above add 1 of the following:

erythromycin base
1 g/day, divided bid to qidx 3 weeks

Additional instructions and notes

-There is no difference in efficacy between the 3 first-line agents (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, cefuroxime axetil and amoxicillin/clavulanate) but there is a major difference in price.

-Other erythromycins, including modified-release preparations, may be 2-7 times more expensive than erythromycin base.
