Warning

People of asian ancestry should undergo genetic testing prior to starting carbamazepine, according to FDA. (Unnecessary in patients who have taken carbamazepine for more than a few months and not experienced any skin reactions).

Risk of rare but serious skin side effects: toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome, characterized by multiple skin lesions, blisters, fever, itching and other symptoms (risk 1-6/10,000; risk is 10x higher in Asian populations)
